What's Happening with Ms. Jacobs' JETS
ELA
We have spent the last few weeks on identifying character traits. We will finish this reading skill this week and move into Story Elements (plot, setting, theme, etc.) We have also been working on identifying prefixes. It is important for students to understanding what the prefixes mean as this helps identify the meaning of difficult words the student may come to. Our William and Mary curriculum for eLc will further introduce students to the concept of using a Literature Web. Students are able to use this model to guide their discussion of the book. They will continue to learn helpful models to guide them through literary discussions. Here is the template and guiding questions for future readings using the Literature Web. Students have also written Opinion speeches that they will share with Mrs. Scullion. Students had to write a persuasive speech for the thesis statement, "We need more recess time." I will try to record some of the speeches onto Class Dojo. We will continue to discuss capitalization rules and begin punctuation next week. Students should also begin practicing the strokes necessary to begin cursive. We will continue to work towards writing cursive letters next week.
Math
We are moving into Module 2: Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure. You may see homework on time. Students need more practice with this concept so this week, they will have a review packet. Here are some helpful links for this week's homework:Lesson 13, Lesson 14, Lesson 15
Since this week is a short week, we will only begin discussing units of weight measurement.
Science
We finished presenting our Animal Research projects. Students did an amazing job. I will try to share with you their presentations. We are focusing on environments and habitats but this week we will be discussing how organisms get the energy they need in an ecosystem.
Social Studies
Students will go back to studying South Carolina geography with a focus on South Carolina's six regions. Students will get to make a brochure for a specific region as well as writing a tanka poem about the region.
October Birthdays
Eagle Leader of the Week
Every 2 weeks I award a student for Eagle Leader of the Week. These are students who are displaying SOARing behavior at all times. Our first leader was Faiq Usmani and this week's Eagle Leader is Sydnee Turner. Congrats to them both.
Emily Jefferson and Robert Wylie helped our class receive the NASA Space Shuttle this week for last week's question "What is the Parker Solar probe?". They answered the NASA WOW Question of the week. Emily was credited for her extensive research and details she provides for the answers. Congrats Emily and Robert!
