Tonight's Homework 8/25

Good afternoon,

Today we kicked off our first official day of learning within the content areas.  In ELA we are beginning our first unit called "Change".  You will receive a letter in family folders explaining the unit.  In Social Studies, we began discussing "Where in the world are we?"  I posted a picture on Twitter of students working together to correctly identify the city, country, county, continent, and state.  In Math, we began our first lesson.  Students learned to identify equal groups and translated math models into multiplication sentences.

Please remember to sign agendas daily.  Here is a copy of the homework students should have written down in their agenda:

Explanation of homework:
NASA Doll Project-  This is the paper instructions.  Students were given just the instructions to review with their parents.  I wanted students to have the time to ask questions and converse about this project with their parent before given the actual template.  I did not however go over this in class.  I will talk more about this Friday when I give the doll template.

Math Lesson 1 Homework: In your child's binder, you will find 2 math packets.  The packet labeled "Problem Set" was completed in class.  The packet labeled "Homework" is what students will do at home.  Students circled problems that they are to complete.  Problems 1a, 1b, and 1c are mandatory.  If students wanted to challenge themselves, they could complete problems 1d and 2 as well.  If they wanted to go above and beyond and impress me, they could complete problems 3 and 4 as well.  If at any time you begin to feel your child and/or yourself feeling frustrated with homework, just stop and email me so that I know to work with your child in the morning.  I told my students, "I would rather you stop, go to bed and be rested the next day than get frustrated and be tired the next day."

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to send me an email.

First Week 8/19/16

Good afternoon students and parents,

We have made it!  Our first week of school was a success.  This week we mainly focused on procedures and getting to know you activities.  Some of the activities will be finished up next week (Me Bags, All About Me Book, Summer Sunglasses) so if you or your child is worried...don't be :-)

Today, your child has received a yellow Family Folder.  These will be given every Friday. Please check and fill out the contents on the inside of the folder and sign the back of the yellow folder.  For example, you should sign beside the line that says August Week 1.

Chromebooks
Thank you parents for signing the RUP forms so that your child can receive a chromebook.  We will not assign chromebooks until Ms. Duke (TLC Specialist) comes to give the class an orientation.

Uniform
I am so proud to say that my class has had 100% uniform all week.  Way to go!  These students are ready for learning.

Stay tuned next week for updates and important information about what is going on in 3rd grade.

A Few Reminders 8/17/16

Whew! We survived.  Students did great on their first day back to school.  I have sent home some homework on the first day.  The All About Me papers need to be colored and turned in.  If your child did not receive one they will receive one tomorrow morning.  This is due this Friday.

Please make sure you sign their agendas every night.  They will get their official agendas on Monday.

I have spoken to some parents about my wish list.  I would like every child to have a 1" or 1 1/2" binder.  It does not matter the color.  They need a pencil pouch (preferably one that can go in the binder).  Also if they could bring a 3 prong, 2 pocket folder that would be helpful.  If you are not able to purchase these items, please email me at carjacobs@richland2.org so I can get these items for your child.

Thank You

It was great seeing all of my students last night.  Thank you so much parents for coming in.  It is so wonderful to meet supportive parents.  Stay tuned in for updates later on this afternoon!
