What's Happening This Week and Other Important Info 11/27

Welcome Back Families,

I am so excited to be back and thrilled to see my JETS. We have so many things to do this week, so I would like to share a brief overview of this week's class agenda. Also, I have included some important information regarding school-wide dates.

We are currently planning our Winter Party for December 15. More information will be sent in Family Folders on Friday.

PS: I have provided earbuds to all students who did not bring them with their school supplies. Remember this was not a required necessity for school but strongly encouraged along with a computer mouse. Just know that these are the only working headphones I have this year so your child will only be given one pair. If they are lost or broken, it will be the parent's responsibility to provide earbuds for the rest of the year. If you have any questions, please let me know.

ELA
  • Every night your child should be reading a book for 20 minutes and then writing this in their ELA journal

  • Students will choose a reading response topic. Students need to write me a letter before our next conference date. The letter must include a greeting, well written paragraph, closing, signature, and include appropriate capitalization and grammar. See the Conference Schedule to see when your child will have a conference with me. They need to have this completed by the same day the following week.

  • We will also continue reading From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Students have been placed in a book club where they will be responsible for reading a second novel while staying current on the class novel. You will see more information about this at a later time.

  • We are continuing our persuasive writings. You will not see this come home until the final product is completed by students.

  • We are also practicing cursive letter writing. Our focus right now has been on lowercase, under curve letters. Please encourage your child to practice their cursive letters. We will finish with lowercase, under curve letters with a quiz this week on Friday for letters f, k, r, s j, and p. The challenge words are their last name and December. Challenge words are used as bonus points on their quiz.

Math
  • We are currently working on place value in terms of reading and writing numbers up to hundred thousands. I know this says grade 4 but we are supplementing these lessons per the district
    • Lesson 4 Concept (This will help with your child's Monday & Tuesday night homework)
    • Lesson 5 Concept (This will help with your child's Wednesday & Thursday homework)

  • We will move into Module 3 which focuses on multiplication and division. This is why it is so important that your child is practicing mastering these facts.

Science
We are learning all about rocks and minerals. We will work this week practicing how to conduct tests on rocks and minerals to help identify a mineral. Your child is always welcome to bring home their notebooks to review and discuss this information with you.

Social Studies
We will begin discussing Native Americans. I will send more information about this unit within the next few days.

Opportunity to Share ….
Remember to check at the end for the NASA Opportunities!

Each year, Richland Two provides a unique opportunity for
students and district staff to share their story through video creation.
We are excited to be in our 5th year and know this will be a bigger event this year.
Our window of opportunity begins on November 6th,
where students can begin finding a school sponsor,
complete the interest form and turn in permission slips.
Visit our timeline of events page to get the important dates.

All money raised goes to help with their STARBASE Swamp Fox field study.
It is hosted by the SC Air National Guard at McEntire Joint National Guard Base.
The students go each day for a whole week.
It is a great experience!
